Driving in South Lantau (Public Transport)

This sign marks the entrance to the Tung Chung Road prohibited zoneResidents, Business Owners and Tour Operators are required to obtain a Closed Road Permit from the Transport Department in order to drive a private car in South Lantau.

The applicant has to prove he or she resides on South Lantau — by producing documentary evidence such as a utility bill, rental lease or sale and purchase agreement. One permit is issued per household (in theory anyway) and since February 2009 allows one to drive “over the hill” on the Tung Chung Road to North Lantau (Airport, Tung Chung) and across the Lantau Link bridge (toll payable) to Kowloon, the New Territories and Hong Kong Island etc).

This costs about 25% of the regular Hong Kong annual licence fee.

The MOT charge (if required) remains the same.

Temporary permits for moving house, bulky deliveries etc are also available. See deliveries for listings of Lantau-based delivery companies that already have permits.

The section of Tung Chung Road between Shek Mun Kap and San Shek Wan would remain a Lantau Closed Road.  All vehicles without a "Lantau Closed Road Permit" are prohibited from entering this road section.  Moreover, this road section will continue to be designated as a daily prohibited zone for all goods vehicles with gross weight over 5.5 tonnes; and daily from 8am to 6pm for all vehicles, except franchised buses, Lantau taxis and those with a "Tung Chung Road Prohibition Zone Permit".$FILE/CAP_374E_e_gb.pdf
